Retractable Screen Doors Buyers Guide

Posted by johnpreston on October 20th, 2015

Retractable screen doors are sold online so it’s easy enough to find one, and buying requires nothing more than a few clicks. But to get the best product you have to do some research and make sure that it offers the best value for your money. Here are some suggestions.

Product Features

Is the screen door built from durable materials? The last thing you want is a screen door that requires constant maintenance, so ensure the design is up to par and that there’s a warranty. Some of these doors have a lifetime warranty while others are good only for a few years: since you’re going to spend money on these products, try to get the most out of it by buying one with a solid warranty.

Design

These screen doors come in different styles, and it really comes down to a matter of personal preference. However there are a few things you need to check such as the customizability. Can the screen be custom fitted to the door? Before you buy, measure your door and ensure that everything fits properly.

Apart from the basic design, the retractable screen should also have a speed reducer. A speed reducer is usually found on the front bar, ensuring the screen retracts slowly, an important feature that prevents the screen from suddenly slamming shut, which could cause injury. While this feature is increasingly common, don’t assume that it is included: go through the product description and look for a speed reducer.

Look also for a sill adapter, because that serves as protection for the bottom track from wear and tear. This or other features that protect the product from wear and tear are essential as you will use the screen constantly. In addition you might want to look for other features like UV resistant components and anti-fading. The more features the product has to prevent wear and tear, the better off you’ll be.

Apart from those already mentioned, the screen frame must have powder coating, as this serves as protection against the elements. Don’t simply assume that these screen frames are powder coated because many of them are not.

Last but not the least, check the cost of a sliding door screen. The number of companies offering these products for sale has increased in recent years, resulting in a drop of the price and increase in feature set. In other words, there’s no reason to pay a high price for quality screens.
