Did You Know Grapes Are Toxic to Dogs?

The humble grape is a tasty snack for humans. But did you that the grape, as well its dried counterpart, the raisin, can prove toxic to dogs? Read on as your veterinarian Marietta, GA tells you more.

What are the symptoms?

Surprisingly, it’s not known what substance causes grapes and raisins to be toxic to dogs. But the symptoms can be serious when they do occur. They include abdominal pain, weakness, vomiting, diarrhea, and tremors. Without treatment, a dog could experience kidney failure.

How is poisoning treated?

Your vet might need to flush your dog’s stomach, or activated charcoal may be given to slow the absorption of the poison in your dog’s gut. If poisoning has reached an advanced stage, fluid therapy to combat dehydration and even blood transfusions might be needed.

How do I prevent the problem?

Luckily, preventing grape and raisin toxicity is as simple as restricting your pet’s access to these fruits. Never leave grapes, raisins, or any foods containing them out on countertops or tables where dogs could reach. Store them safely in the refrigerator, cabinets, or a container.
