Natalie Roth- Turning Emo In To Real Musical Value?

Natalie Roth is an artist who’s been in media, notably film, since she was a toddler. As a new singer/ songwriter, she’s now hitting her stride as a major, unique talent with a penchant for some pretty unforgettable work.

Roth is what you’d have to call an A student in terms of quality in her work. She’s worked with some big names, and there’s no doubt she’s learned her trade well. Her arrangements are uncluttered, clean, and with a good ear for sound clarity unusual in the often very sloppy “let’s add another track” world pop genre.  

She uses twists of style, rhythms, and mixes which say a lot more about her skills. Her music is a hybrid of styles, forms, and doesn’t really fit the Emo genre, despite the devastatingly effective song “Daddy(Aba)” a hard edged song about divorced parents and family breakups.  

This song is about “life experience”, but with added dimensions of presentation and music coming from areas of the soul where most people tend to have raw nerves. Roth’s contribution is a truly tasteful, and surprisingly effective, musical rendition of a situation which nobody could call easy to describe.

This song was a collaboration with Israeli music legend Avi Toledano, and the video adds another dimension in itself. It’s a rather stunning portrayal of a daddy and daughter in the midst of the train wreck of a divorce, no trivial foray in to one of life’s toughest subjects.

If you’re thinking that it takes a certain amount of emotional strength and chutzpah to do a song about divorce at all, let alone do it well and tastefully, you need to see the video. The musical value in this song is a sort of character reference to Roth as an artist.
