What is Aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy is the use of a plant's fragrance-generating oils (organic essential oils) for the purpose of healing illness. Essential oils are extracted from the flowers, stems, leaves, stems, bark, roots or twigs of a particular plant. The essential oils used in aromatherapy treatments are usually diluted with carrier oils, which can also be chosen for their individual scent characteristics. Most plants have fragrances which provide a natural therapeutic benefit; however, different plants offer different scents as well as different levels of fragrance intensity.

Aromatherapy refers to the application of essential oils to the body for the purpose of alleviating pain, improving relaxation, encouraging digestion, boosting energy, and relieving stress. Aromatherapy is sometimes used as a holistic therapy in massage therapy to promote overall health and well-being. Aromatherapy products can include candles (both regular and electric), bath and body products such as soaps and shampoos, lotions, gels, creams, and sprays. Aromatherapy massage lotions and body scrubs are also available.

Aromatherapy is safe to use because it contains no preservatives or synthetic chemicals. Essential oils are distilled from plant sources using a distillation process that leaves behind only the essential oils, with all other elements such as color, texture, and scent having been removed. Essential oils can also be extracted through a process called steam distillation. Steam distillers use hot water and vaporize the liquid through a porous material containing suspended solids. These ingredients pull the essential oils into the steam at a very high temperature, which is then released through a cooling agent.

One way to ingest essential oils is through inhalation. Many people use essential oils for aromatherapy inhalation, because they find the inhalation pleasant. To use this method safely, you should dilute the oil. An essential oil inhaler is available, but it can be dangerous if you do not follow proper guidelines. Do not inhale any oils until they have completely dissolved in your lungs; however, if you do ingest essential oils directly, you will experience a very pleasant aroma - much like inhaling fresh baking bread.

Essential oils provide many positive effects on overall health and well-being. For example, peppermint has a delightful aroma and relieves coughs and sore throats. Lavender is wonderful for stress reduction and insomnia. The same is true for several other essential oils such as eucalyptus, pine, jasmine, and basil.

Aromatherapy scented body and bath products are also available. These products are available in both unscented and scented forms, and many of them are included in natural/organic skincare products as well. For example, Rosemary oil is included in organic skincare products that can be used for skin care and as a personal care treatment. Orange oil is a wonderful personal care product that can be used to freshen the breath, sooth burns, and as an insect repellent. Peppermint oil is great for cooking and for inhaling. And, did I mention the fact that Rosemary oil is excellent for preventing colds and coughs?

One interesting thing about essential oils is that they have the ability to change the brain's chemistry so they have a beneficial affect on our moods, feelings, and behavior patterns. Some people feel that they need to change their entire lifestyle if they want to be happy. However, most people only need to change their dietary habits (eat healthy) and supplement that with aromatherapy treatments to be fully satisfied. Aromatherapy supports your whole body and promotes well being. It is particularly helpful to relieve stress by using essential oils that have a calming effect.

The therapeutic healing power of essential oils has been recognized since the ancient times when essential oils were used in all kinds of remedies to treat people who had diseases or who were suffering from discomforts brought about by ailments. There are now very good and reliable sources for buying aromatherapy supplies (e.g. online stores) which can make purchasing aromatherapy products convenient and economical. However, just because these oils are readily available does not mean you will necessarily experience any health benefits. You must always consult your doctor or health care professional before making use of any of the aromatherapy products that you have purchased. Also remember to follow recommended instructions carefully in order to avoid any unpleasant consequences.
