Thermal printing is a new and rapidly growing technique used in the printing industry. Thermal printers are used most commonly to create labels, safety signs, wayfinding markers, barcodes, shipping labels, and other heavily-used items. The image created is generally a digital file that can be read by a thermal printer. In its simplest form, the direct thermal printing (also known as direct thermal print) is a method, which creates an image on thermal paper by applying direct heat to it. This is an extremely effective and efficient way to print with thermal ink, especially when you're printing in large quantities. Such approach provides quick, cost-effective, low maintenance, and quality results and it can be applied to a range of different materials including, but not limited to, thermal transfer paper, thermal plates, plastic, and glass.

Thermal printing uses coated thermal paper. BPA is a plastic compound that has been banned due to links to breast cancer. Because it forms a barrier on the thermal paper when applied, the ink cannot flow freely to the surface of the paper and so thermal printing cannot be fully completed. Thermal labels are also created on special thermal papers using other methods. This can include applying a special thermal printer ink onto a substrate, such as quartz resin, which is then applied to a piece of thermal printed paper. Then the ink is heated up to such an extent that it is able to spread into the substrate. A combination of various techniques can also be used to apply thermal labels onto a substrate. This variety of technique means that different substrates can have different textures and patterns applied to them, meaning that thermal labels can be applied in any number of different ways.
