Dry Eye Treatments

Keratoconjunctivitis sicca (dry eye syndrome) or just dry eye is an eye condition caused by decreased tear production or increased tear film evaporation in a person. Symptoms of the condition include stinging, dryness and sandy irritation of the eyes, which progresses throughout the day. Other symptoms include pain, pressure at the back of the eye, redness, itching and a twitching sensation. There are approved treatments for dry eye, one of which is Restasis (cyclosporine ophthalmic solution 0.05%) manufactured by Allergan Inc.

What is Restasis and how does it work? Restasis intraocular emulsion solution is a diluted cyclosporine eye drop intended to increase tear production in patients whose tear production is presumed to be inhibited as a result of an eye infection associated with keratoconjunctivitis sicca. This may interrupt the supply of fluid to the eye due to compression of the narrow canals. It enhances the natural ability of the eyes to produce tears, which may be reduced due to inflammation caused by chronic dry eye.

Studies have shown that this drug is not effective in increasing tear production in patients who have used tear duct plugs and anti-inflammatory eye drops. Allergan Inc. stated that it provides early relief, but studies suggest that the full effect may be seen after 90 days of continued use. What are the side effects of Restasis? Patients using Restasis may experience mild itching or stinging; blurred vision; a feeling that something is in the eye. If these symptoms persist, consult a doctor.

Seek medical attention immediately if any of these acute side effects occur during use: severe allergic reactions such as difficulty breathing; tightness around the chest; swelling of the face, tongue, mouth or lips; changes in vision; worsened itching or stinging; persistent blurred vision; eye bleeding; excessive production of tears; and eye pain.

How should Restas be used and how should it be used? This medicine is applied directly to the eye twice daily, about every 12 hours, unless otherwise directed by your doctor. The bottle is good for one dose only and any leftover medicine should be discarded immediately. If artificial tears are used, there should be a 15-minute break before Restasis is given. Make sure you do not handle the surface of the dropper bottle as it is kept sterile. Handling it would make it unsterile and could aggravate the eye infection.

If you wear contact lenses, remember to remove them first before giving the medicine. They can be put back in 15 minutes after the medicine is given. Are there other treatments for dry eye besides Restasis? Cyclosporine is a cyclic polypeptide derived from mushrooms that contains 11 amino acids that inhibit the production of interleukins and cytokines and the proliferation of T lymphocyte cells, thus reducing inflammation. This is a generic version of Restasis. What is the difference between these two treatments for dry eye?

Cyclosporine is the active ingredient in both generic and branded forms, so the mode of action and interactions are very similar. The difference between the two forms is their brand name, pricing and packaging. Generic options are cheaper because they do not involve branding, research, development and promotion costs.
