Monitoring is a concept incorporated in machines and the idea was implemented to enhance the physical capabilities of man. It involves automatic control and the monitoring equipment adapts to changing circumstances and performs as specified, varying as per performance and applications. A condition monitoring program plays a very important role in most industrial companies that have plant machinery. These programs enable companies of all sizes to manage costs and extend the lifetime of plant machinery, through on-going maintenance and monitoring performance of machinery on a regular basis. Condition monitoring from a maintenance perspective involves using a number of techniques to monitor how a machine is performing.

The conditioning monitoring of a machine is the process of monitoring the condition of a machine with the intent to predict mechanical wear and failure. Vibration, noise, and temperature measurements are often used as key indicators of the state of the machine. Trends in the data provide health information about the machine and help detect machine faults early; which prevents unexpected failure and costly repair. Condition monitoring is performed using a number of different techniques: Oil Analysis, Vibration Analysis, Thermal Imaging and Ultrasonic measurements. In order to perform all these tests, companies need to buy high temperature sensors or low frequency velocity sensor and so forth. Each equipment requires a significant amount of knowledge, but it ensures that maintenance can be done considerably more accurately.

Vibration analysis is used to tell when parts are out of balance, misaligned or simply not bolted down correctly. Vibration is a huge problem in manufacturing and mining. Thermal imaging picks up heat variations and is used to identify equipment and specific components that are running hotter than they should be (which is a sign or imminent failure). Ultrasonic measurement is used to measure the thickness of the pipe, or equipment which is only accessible from one side. Being non-destructive and highly efficient, it is commonly used in all maintenance departments.

Condition monitoring will continue to play a very important role in companies of all sizes, in keeping track of the condition of their equipment and reducing costs of repair and extending the lifetime of machinery through planned maintenance and analysing the performance of equipment. Companies are continually looking for ways to reduce costs and in industrial plants, reducing downtime of machinery is one of the most effective ways of doing this; so industries continue to invest in these programmes for the foreseeable future.
