Formats in Engraving

While there are several choices in engraving, the most popular are monograms, initials, and inscriptions since these are easily done on jewellery including on sterling silver. For example, initials will be a better choice in the limited space of a ring while inscriptions can be made on a chunky bracelet.

• Initials are similar to monograms but with a difference – the initials are of the same size and separated by periods such that each letter is distinctive.

• Inscriptions are two or more words (text) engraved into the piece. Bear in mind that the words will be limited by the size of the jewellery piece, such that fewer words can be made on a ring than on a bracelet. The words can be inscribed in one of three ways, namely, horizontal, landscape, and portrait depending on the size of the piece and number of words.

You should choose a font that reflects your personality as a giver or the personality of your receiver, aside from the obvious aspect of ensuring that the letters can actually be read with the naked eye.
