The Best Podcast List for You to Listen To

Posted by Justin Taylor on June 1st, 2021

While the numbers are sure to fluctuate, there is an average of 4,566 new podcast episodes uploaded daily — and that’s on the low end. No wonder it’s impossible to keep up with the latest and greatest! Fortunately, content curators are listening closely and distilling the best of the best for us to consume. Let’s explore some of the best podcasts for you to listen to.

Coming in at number one on our list of podcasts to stream is The New York Times’ “The Argument.” There’s no argument that political opinions in the U.S. have grown increasingly more polarized over the past four years. “The Argument” has positioned itself in the middle of all the controversy as David Leonhardt, Michelle Goldberg and Ross Douthat debate new and timely topics every week. Fair warning: This isn’t a podcast to play on your way to celebrate Thanksgiving with the fam. But if you’re one of the few still willing to practice your listening skills in this loud and chaotic political landscape, you just might learn why the other side is on the other side. If you’re not afraid to have your ideas challenged, start by streaming “The Abortion Debate.”

Ranking at number two on our list of podcasts to stream is comedian Chris Gethard’s “Beautiful Stories From Anonymous People.” In each episode, Chris Gethard spends one hour talking over the phone with an anonymous caller while respectfully asking them subtle but probing questions about their life experiences. Toward the end of 2019, Gethard released episode 132, titled “I Survived a Mass Shooting,” which successfully transcended all his previous work. No wonder Time magazine has called Gethard’s podcast a “master class in empathy.”

Taking home the bronze medal on our list of podcasts to stream is NPR’s “Code Switch.” This incredible podcast explores how race and ethnicity intersect with cultural and societal dynamics. Hosted by Gene Demby and Shereen Marisol Meraji, each episode is a little different. Some episodes dive deep into otherwise personal topics, such as struggling to reconcile your perceived ethnicity with unexpected DNA test results, and some episodes challenge listeners to explore how Western colonial values largely influence beauty standards. There are so many great podcasts to sink your teeth into over a long commute or with the company of your friends. We hope our list of podcasts has given you some new and exciting content to engage with. Happy streaming!
