If there has been a fire on the other side of the door and it has burned out due to a lack of oxygen, the act of opening the door may lead to an inrush of oxygen at a terrific rate. Any obstruction in these areas reduces the passage of people and may lead to casualties. If you think there may be a fire behind a closed door do the following checks before attempting to open the door. Fire extinguishers should ideally only be used by someone who has been trained to do so - and the following text does not count as training. Call your local fire department (non-emergency number), or your fire extinguisher service company for complete training in the use of extinguishers. 4. You have not received appropriate training and are not confident in the use of fire extinguishers. 3. Do not fight a fire which is large and/or spreading or if you are unsure of the type of extinguisher to use on the fire. In the United Kingdom there are six different fire extinguisher types, each one is designed for a different type of fire, some are ideal for certain industries, while others are the perfect choice to keep at home in case of emergency. Means of escape is the term used to describe your exit route and the associated fire safety measures i.e. fire doors, emergency lighting, fire call points, hosereels and fire extinguishers, fire action notices and exit route signs. University Fire Action Notices are posted in your workplace. You should still muster at the normal assembly point for your workplace. 1. Do not smoke in your workplace. Signs of smoke inhalation include noisy distressed breathing, choking, coughing, impaired consciousness leading to unconsciousness and possible dark smoke stains around the mouth and nose. Studying the chemical or powder's properties is also ideal, for it gives us firsthand information regarding possible dangers and effects. If you want to protect your Houston building from the dangers of fire without risking your critical equipment or priceless artifacts, Kauffman Co. offers the clean agent fire extinguisher services you need. Want to be even more amazed? Statistics show there are more serious fires at night than during daylight hours.

Some schools may also have other types of extinguishers.

This can mean the difference between saving a life or causing more problems. Injuries sustained in a fire may include burns and breathing problems caused by smoke inhalation. Remember, putting water on a fire creates steam and steam burns can be fatal. 3. Pour copious amounts of cold water over the burn or immerse in cold water i.e. bucket/bath for at least 10 minutes. Events can move rapidly when a fire occurs so you must know your fire routine before a fire breaks out i.e. what to do if the fire alarm sounds and what to do if you discover a fire. It’s too late to go searching for one when a fire breaks out. Everybody may be sleeping when the fire breaks out. Some schools may also have other types of extinguishers. If you don’t have a fire extinguisher handy, you can use a heavy blanket to smother the fire via oxygen deprivation. Ensure you grip the blanket in such a way that your hands are inside the fold. Typical small lab fires (in a hood or on a bench) can easily be controlled by a dry chemical (ABC) or CO2 extinguisher provided that you are properly trained. There are 5 main types of extinguisher: Water, Powder, Foam, CO2 and Wet Chemical. Older extinguishers are colour coded and have instructions for use written on the label. Fire doors should have a circular blue sign on them and a self-closing mechanism which allows the door to return to a fully closed position after each use. The width of corridors and doors are designed to allow a pre-determined number of occupants to escape safely in an emergency. Make sure that the extinguisher that you use is appropriate for your emergency. Specialist use on flammable liquids and also effective on carbonaceous fires. A dry powder fire extinguisher is for Class D or combustible metal fires only. Class D is for combustible metals, such as magnesium, titanium, sodium, etc., which require an extinguishing medium that does not react with the burning metal. Indicates the extinguisher is suitable for use on Class A fires e.g. wood, paper etc., known as carbonaceous materials. Indicates the extinguisher is suitable for for use on Class C fires e.g. flammable gases (Do NOT use an extinguisher on a flammable gas fire until the gas supply has been switched off). 4. Do not have fabric or other readily combustible material near electric fires or portable gas heaters.

7. Ensure safe storage of gas cylinders. If one extinguisher does not put the fire out, GET OUT AND CLOSE THE DOOR BEHIND YOU AND STAY OUT UNTIL TOLD BY A FIRE SERVICE OFFICER IT IS SAFE TO RETURN. Do not wait for a lift to come as in many cases they will automatically go to the ground floor when the alarm activates and will stay there. There will be fresh air at floor level. However, there are automatic extinguishers that fill a room with extinguishing agents or hood systems that activate when a certain temperature is detected, extinguishers come in many shapes and sizes. However, one thing that is important to remember is to only use approved tiki torch fuel in your torches - never use kerosene, gasoline, or any other flammable material (unless recommended by the tiki torch manufacturer). They don’t affect the earth’s ozone layer, which means they’re safe to use without harming the environment. All new extinguishers must conform to the British Standard BS EN 3, which means that they will have a red body and icons to indicate the types of fire they can be used on. You should ensure that all extinguishers you buy meet the requirements of the appropriate British Standard and display the kitemark , Loss Prevention Certification Board (LPCB) mark or Apragaz certification mark. After, you can buy other specialty pots and pans, such as pressure cookers, water boilers and other helpful appliances. Crouching helps you keep clear of any smoke and avoid heat from the flames and steam, so crouch when using water on a fire. Whatever your business is, if you’re using flammable paints, ensure everybody is being as safe as possible. 3. There is any risk of your personal safety and/or escape route being cut off either by fire or smoke. If you do not have an alternative route out, use clothing or any other items to block the bottom of the door to help prevent smoke ingress , open a window and shout loudly for help. 4. Do not use lifts to exit the building. Firefighters have lost their lives searching for people who were thought to be in a building while that person has been safely evacuated.

  • Blue coloured band
  • Flammable liquids, like paint and petrol
  • Check that the area is safe and then phone 9-999
  • Use good judgement

The older extinguishers will only be removed when they have reached the end of their useful life and are coloured RED - water, BLACK - CO2, CREAM - foam, BLUE - dry powder. Carbon Dioxide - Red body (possibly with black somewhere on the upper half of the extinguisher). Class C license allows servicing, recharging, repairing, installing, or inspecting all types of fire extinguishers, except recharging carbon dioxide units and conducting hydrostatic tests on all types of fire extinguishers, except carbon dioxide units. The fire easily dies out when carbon dioxide displaces oxygen. There are certain quality marks to look out for. These are Blue in colour and give instructions in the event of a fire. The Alternate Site Director would be the person or persons who would be the second in command and would also be able to make the same decisions as the Site Director in the event the Site Director was unavailable. 2. Reassure the casualty, make them comfortable as possible and encourage them to lie down and raise their feet. In this experiment you will learn how to make a fire extinguisher with baking soda and vinegar. Do not allow the build up of rubbish or other combustible material in your work area, corridors or stair enclosures as this is fuel for fire and may also create obstructions to escape routes. Appropriate fire extinguishers may also have hoods over them that help extinguish the fire. Hold the blanket in front of you and lay it over the burning material, do not throw the blanket. Fire Blanket - Effective at smothering a fire and protecting you from heat and flames. Q1. Is a fire blanket a type of fire extinguisher? 1. Alcohol-based hand sanitisers should be stored away from all heat and ignition sources, including sparks; open flames; any type of electrical outlets, switches, or equipment. If it is cool to touch, check the door handle in the same way as heat will conduct readily through some door handles. Test the door for heat by running the back of your hand against the door from top to bottom. The only reason it’s not top of the list is that it’s small - probably too small for our home. Home fire extinguishers are cost-effective. The models rated as ABC are multi-purpose fire fighting equipment and the powder contains ammonium phosphate as its main agent.
