Three-step Method for Resolving Sliding Door Screen Issues

Posted by johnpreston on November 25th, 2015

Many issues can occur with retractable sliding screen doors, such as the doors being wobbly, not properly sliding, and not sliding as expected (i.e., stuck in the tracks), among others. Instead of calling in the professional door repairmen, you can adopt the following three-step method in resolving the issue on your own using a few simple tools and applying your commonsense.

Just keep in mind, nonetheless, that when the issue appears to be a major one, your best bet is to call the professionals for the job. You may be doing more harm than good to the faulty sliding door screen when you apply your DIY tools and skills to its repair.

Step 1 – Find the Issue

Due to the wide range of possible issues associated with sliding door screens, you will initially find it difficult to determine the root cause of the faulty door screen. You can, however, perform the following steps to narrow down the possible causes:

•   Open and close the sliding screen door.
•   Examine the track and wheels while you are sliding the screen door.
•   Look for breaks or spaces in the rolling motion, which will require adjustments to its height.
•   Clean the top and bottom tracks of the accumulated dirt, dust and debris. Use a clean terrycloth towel to remove these things before squirting the wheels and tracks with lubrication grease.
•   Open and close the sliding screen door again. If the issue persists, you have to adjust the door.

Step 2 - Locate the Adjusting Screws

In case of changing the height of the sliding screen door, you have to loosen and tighten the screws, as needed.

•   Find the adjusting screws, which are usually located on the wheel assembly.
•   Determine whether the adjusting screws require adjustments. This is because a top wheel assembly will not require adjustments.

Step 3 – Adjust the Sliding Screen Door

Patience is necessary when adjusting the sliding screen door as making adjustments to its height is often a trial-and-error process. When you have located the wheel assembly’s adjustable screws, you can proceed to the following steps:

•   Locate the first screw and adjust it; turn it clockwise and the screen door’s height increases while turning it counter-clockwise will decrease its height.
•   Adjust the second screw. Once you have adjusted the first side, you can adjust the wheel on the other side.

Indeed, a French door screen door combo is an excellent installation in your home. The trick is in putting your DIY skills to the test when it requires minor repairs.
