Getting a Gun Belt? A Primer for Choosing the Right Types of Pouches

Posted by GunBroker.com on June 7th, 2021

Whether you are going to a competition, wearing it for duty, or just heading to the range, a gun belt, also called a battle belt or war belt can be useful. While the general types of pouches and accessories for the belt are unlikely to change, retention levels on the holster for your CZ 75 SP 01 and more are considerations for each pouch. Here is how to decide what should go on your belt.

Which Type of Belt Is Right for You?

There are three main types of belts available. The original gun belt is a stiff belt. You will need pouches with belt loops for this. This is usually the type of belt that police and other law enforcement use. Next, a gun belt with a modular sleeve adds an additional slotted sleeve with MOLLE webbing. Finally, a MOLLE belt either comes as one piece or a two-layered piece that connects to an inner belt via velcro.

Choosing the Right Holster

Whether you own cheap guns or a competition-ready gun, you will need a holster. The important part of your holster is the level of retention. Level 1 retention is through friction only. These holsters are good for concealed carrying but not outside the belt. Level 2 retention adds active retention, such as a trigger guard lock or thumb break. Level 3 has two active devices, and Level 4 has three active retention mechanisms.

The Right Ammo Pouches for Your Needs

Different situations demand different pouches. Law enforcement may need more pistol mag pouches, whereas competition shooters should tailor their belts to whatever the competition requires. Those on military duty might have more flexibility, depending on their assignment. It is also important to get the right pouches, as a generic mag pouch might not properly hold mags for a DPMS 308.

IFAK

No matter what you are using the gun belt for, you will want an individual first aid kit. Should an accident happen or someone gets hurt, you will have supplies ready. Be sure to also have an extra tourniquet on your belt above what might be held in the pouch. It is up to you whether you want a small or large size pouch, though this might also depend on your profession. For example, if you are a military medic, you will likely need to have more supplies on you. A competition shooter will likely only need a smaller pouch and may not need to know how to use all the supplies as long as someone else does.

Specialized Pouches or Holders

Finally, you might have pouches or holders specific to your job. This could include radio holders or light stick holders. If you are just going to the range, you likely will not need these. You can also repurpose other holders, such as a pistol mag holder being used instead for a small flashlight.
