PBX (Private Branch Exchange) consists of the hardware and software that powers the telephone systems of businesses. PBX systems route calls to one or more offices by linking a company's central numbers to multiple extensions. 

Most models of the PBX system offer other features, including:

  • Conference call;
  • Call waiting notification;
  • Recording of calls;
  • Call waiting functions such as music on hold (music plays while callers are on hold) or queue (organizes incoming calls into a waiting list).

How Does a PBX Phone System Work?

A PBX system can handle many calls that businesses receive each day by carrying phone traffic so that multiple physical phones can share the same outgoing phone lines (or "trunk"). The system assigns each telephone, fax, or similar device a designated extension part of the internal network.

Hosted PBX providers offer implementation, ongoing support, and disaster recovery plans, such as multiple carrier-grade data centres in different regions, should there be a problem with a company's internet connection.

VIRTUAL PBX

A virtual PBX is software that runs on a computer server that uses VoIP technology to emulate the functions of standard PBX hardware. Using virtualization technology, a virtual PBX can share hardware with other server software, thereby reducing costs.

However, grouping multiple virtual servers on the same server hardware can be risky in the event of a hardware failure, as all virtual servers will be down until the hardware is repaired.

MOBILE PBX

Mobile PBXs are a type of hosted PBX that allows full connection to mobile phones (in addition to transferring calls to them) and offers the same extended functionality as desk phones connected to the system (often through applications). This allows the workforce to be more mobile and flexible and to "have offices" anywhere.

If you want to add mobile functions to an on-premises or landline PBX, there is an alternative method: third-party upgrade.
