How to Travel with Your Firearms

Traveling with firearms does not have to be difficult, but you definitely need to know what you are doing and have the right equipment if you want a smooth journey. Whether you are traveling with your handgun in your car across state lines or you are flying with your Benelli M4 for a hunting trip, knowing what is required to make traveling smooth and stress-free is essential.

Hard Locking Case

No matter how you are traveling, you will likely want a hard case. Whether the case is going in the back of your car or you are checking it at the ticket counter in the airport, a hard case that can lock is essential. If you are flying, you will be required to declare your luggage. Your Beretta A300 will have to be unloaded, and your best bet is to safely tuck it away in a hard case with foam inserts. Keep in mind, only the firearm can be in the case. You may even want a case that does not look like it holds a firearm, such as a guitar case or golf club holder. Finally, you will have to sign a card verifying you have stored your gun properly in the case, which is then locked.

Non-TSA Lock

When flying, you are the only person allowed to have the combination or key to your gun case. This means you cannot legally use a TSA lock, as some TSA agents have master keys. You can find cheap but sturdy locks to keep your hard case safe. Bear in mind that this means if TSA needs to open your case, they will need your approval. TSA agents are not allowed to handle your firearms, and they need a law enforcement officer to make an inspection.

A Checked Bag for Ammo

If you want to bring ammo, extra optics, accessories, and other items, it is best to store them in a checked bag. Some airlines will let you use the cardboard boxes for ammo, while others require other storage options. However, you will probably want a hard ammo case for maximum safety if the airline allows it. Magazines, firing pins, and other parts of the firearm cannot be stored in carry-ons, so you will need to check those accessories as well. For example, magazines must be in a secure box or hard-sided checked case.

List of Laws for Where You Are Traveling To

Laws vary between states and countries. Be sure to have a list of any changes handy so you are not unknowingly breaking any laws. It might also be helpful to have a list of airline-specific rules on top of general TSA laws. Generally, if you are driving from one place to another with similar laws, you should be fine. Most states allow the transport of unloaded guns in cars stored in a case or locked in a trunk across state lines, as long as no one in the vehicle can access them. There may be exceptions for concealed carry permit holders, meaning you might be able to conceal your Beretta 9mm while driving. No matter what, always double-check all applicable laws first.

Carrying Concealed Weapons

Be sure to check your concealed carry permit’s state reciprocity. If the state you are traveling to does not have reciprocity with your state, it is useless, and you will not be able to legally carry your concealed weapon. If your CCW does have reciprocity, you can concealed carry.
