Knowing About Magic Mushroom Spores

Psilocybe cubensis (also called magic mushrooms) is a mushroom species that belongs to the class of ‘psychedelic’ mushrooms. This specie contains compounds known as psilocybin and psilocin. These compounds are psychoactive and are known to cause symptoms of euphoria. Even though the compounds present in these mushrooms a mind-melting feeling, they are actually boosting the brain connectivity. 

These mushrooms are reddish brown to golden brown in color and they turn purplish when bruised. Their closely spaced gills consist of spores that are purple colored. Also known as magic mushroom spores, they germinate once they have found a suitable substrate. Cubensis grow very nicely on dung, and hence they grow exceptionally well on the horse and cow manure. They also grow well on coconut coir, straw and whole grains.

But, when someone places them in the appropriate conditions, they will grow and produce mycelium and may be used for illegal purposes. How are the spores useful for microscopy?

Almost all educational institutions need the spores of the magic mushroom for the purpose of identifying mushrooms that are found in the wild. They are also useful for conducting experiments in laboratories. Students of mycology find this  an interesting species to study as it has numerous phenotypes. 

Inoculation using spore syringe

The spore syringe can also be used in the inoculation of substrates. With the spore syringe, one could drop 3 mm of spore solution in order to colonize one liter of the substrate. Simply dropping a few millimeters in each corner of the substrate is enough. After a few days, it is possible to find white patches of mycelium in the places where the spores were dropped. One needs to wait until the whole substrate gets colonized. Once the mushrooms are found, they can be collected. Their spores can also be taken and preserved for future use.

Storing spore syringes

Spore syringes containing magic mushroom spores should be kept in the refrigerator at a temperature of 2 to 8 degrees Celsius. If spore solution remains in the syringe after use, the luer lock can be reattached to the syringe and it can be used within twelve months.
