Steps to do morel mushroom farming

The cultivation of morel mushrooms was difficult for humans  needs revising. Morel mushroom appears only for a few months during spring and since they can be found only on hillsides, so the hunting of the morels is really a difficult task. In order to solve this issue, mushroom farming of the morels would be the best way. But, unlike the cultivation of other varieties, raising the morels is not so easy.

Cultivate using kits

One of the easiest methods to propagate any mushroom is to make use of the mushroom spawn that is readily available from suppliers. Spawn for these mushrooms could come in the form of grains, sawdust or wood chips. This could be used in inoculating larger parts of the substrate in order to form a mushroom bed.

The growing kits of these mushrooms can be found by searching the Internet for online stores. These kits reach the buyer along with the instructions on how to use them. Here are the steps to cultivate using the kits:

The first step is to prepare the mushroom bed. This should be done in a shady place between summer and fall. The soil in the bed should be sandy and must contain sufficient drainage. Then, some ashes must be added from the burnt wood to this soil. The bed is ready now.

The next step will be to plant the spores as per the instructions given in the kit. This is not too difficult. However, it is essential to spread some hardwood chips over the mushroom bed.

Cultivate using spore solution

For any professional mushroom hunter, mushroom farming won’t be a problem because they don’t have to go in search for special growing kits. They can use the spore solution for cultivating morels. This can be prepared by mixing morel spores in a solution containing water, salt and molasses. After mixing all the contents, the solution should be left as such for one or two days and then can be used for inoculating an outdoor mushroom bed.

After the said time, the spore solution can be spread over the mushroom bed, which is prepared following the steps mentioned in the previous method.

Cultivate in the Trees

Morels can be often seen near trees. Therefore morel mushroom farming can be done on the roots of the trees. This can be accomplished by inoculating the morel spores into the roots of the trees. Following are some examples of the trees in which this mushroom cultivation could be done:

Elm tree

Ash tree

Apple tree

The young tree of these varieties can be infected with the spores of the morel mushroom and must be planted together with the tree. These days, there are young trees inoculated with the mushroom spores readily available. These types of trees can be bought and planted in order to get morel mushrooms.
