The Unique Handicraft of India

Indian handicrafts are rich and diverse not just in form but also in history and religious essence. They mostly reflect the influence of empires and religious beliefs and throughout centuries, these art forms have been immensely embedded in the culture and tradition of communities. Today and across the globe, Indian handicrafts are widely sold as consumer goods and decorative pieces, although this does little to diminish the value and essence of these art forms in India's cultural, historical, and religious makeup.

India is one of the richest countries in the world as far as art and culture are concerned. The country is very well-known for its ethnicity, and it is greatly blessed with highly skilled artisans who are keen on keeping their artistic traditions alive. In fact, many people, particularly in rural places earn their living from art-making.

There are many different types of handicrafts featured in Indian traditions. The country is even dubbed a manufacturing hub of different forms of art and crafts that international markets crave for. Bamboo handicrafts are quite common, with India being a huge producer of handicrafts. These types of products are popular not only because of their beauty and versatility but also because of their environment-friendly nature. Some popular bamboo crafts produced in India include dolls and toys, baskets, furniture, chalani, mats, umbrella handles, wall hangings, kathi, jewelry boxes, and many more.

Brass handicrafts are also popular, mainly because they are hard-wearing, durable, and excellent to work with, especially when creating statues and images of deities in their unique postures. Ganesh and Krishna figures are usually made out of brass, along with other items like vases, perforated lamps, table tops, ornament boxes, toys, hukkas, fruit bowls, and even wine glasses.

Clay handicrafts and pottery are among the most primitive forms of art in the country. Uttar Pradesh is best known for painted black pottery and other forms of clay ware, along with other regions like West Bengal, Pune, Himachal Pradesh, Bikaner, and Lucknow. Woodcrafts are also very prevalent in India. Many places are known for unique woodwork that include everything from toys to utensils, jewelry, decorative pieces, household goods, and even worship idols. Embroidery and woven crafts are also very popular in the country, particularly those coming from the states of Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh. India is famous for Bandhanis, which is a unique form of weaving, among many other types of handicrafts ranging from glass and enamel handicrafts to metal and marble crafts, leather work, paintings, wall hangings, and sculptures.
