Breast surgery is widely believed to be only for women, but it can be performed on men who have enlarged or over-developed breasts. Males have the option to seek gynaecomastia surgery, the surgical correction of the enlarged breasts. The factors that may cause gynaecomastia in males include the use of certain drugs, obesity, hormonal changes, and heredity. The condition seems harmless, but it causes emotional discomfort and even damage a man's self-esteem and self-confidence. Some men may avoid physical intimacy and activities to conceal their condition.

Characterisation and treatment

Gynaecomastia is characterised by excess glandular tissue development, localised fat, and at times, excess breast skin. The enlargement may occur in one or both breasts. Surgery will reduce the breast size, enhance, and flatten the contours of the chest. In severe gynaecomastia, in which the weight of the extra breast tissue may cause the areola to stretch and the breasts to sag, mammaplasty or plastic surgery to correct the condition may be administered. In this case, the surgeon may surgically improve the areola's size and position, and reduce the excess skin.

Am I a candidate for gynaecomastia?

You are a good candidate for Gynaecomastia if:

  • Other alternative medical treatments failed to correct the condition
  • You are completely healthy, without any life-threatening medical condition or illness that can slow or impair healing
  • You do not use drugs, and you do not smoke
  • You have a specific goal and a positive outlook for improving gynaecomastia's physical symptoms
  • You are physically healthy, with a normal weight
  • You have a stabilised breast development
  • You have realistic expectations
  • You are bothered with the feeling of having large breasts

How is gynaecomastia surgery done?

The procedure includes the administration of anaesthetics and intravenous sedation to ensure your comfort. Some surgeons may use liposuction techniques to remove excess fatty tissue through the insertion of a thin hollow tube through small incisions. Excision is another technique that is recommended when the excess skin or glandular breast tissue must be removed, or when the nipple or areola must be repositioned or reduced. A surgeon may combine both excision and liposuction for best results, too.

Where should I go for gynaecomastia surgery in the UK?

Gynaecomastia surgery must only be administered by a licensed and experienced plastic or cosmetic surgeon in the UK. Look for a surgeon with at least a decade of experience in plastic surgery. Moreover, make sure that the surgeon is recognised and a member of the British Association of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (BAPRAS) or the British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and is on the General Medical Council (GMC) Specialist register for Plastic Surgery.
