The Meaning and Practice of the Deconstructive Life Style

Lifestyle is one of the most important factors that determine a person's success or failure in life. The word was first introduced by Austrian psychiatrist Alfred Adler in his 29th book, The Case of Miss R. with the more contemporary meaning of "the dominant behavioral patterns, attitudes, and beliefs of an adult". The theories of Adler are the basis for the beliefs of the modern theory of control. According to this view, we can categorize human beings into different classes depending on the manner in which they relate to their environment, which in turn determines their ability to control themselves and their environment. Hence, we have the three perspectives of control, namely, self-control, interpersonal control, and social control.

The concept of the life style and the related concepts are designed to help people understand how they can improve their lives through a systematic approach that considers the interdependence of lifestyle choices. This article will focus on the problems of unhealthy lifestyle. The main issues related to unhealthy lifestyle are lack of motivation, poor concentration, procrastination, sloppiness, and emotional immaturity. As mentioned above, Adler believed that these are the basic causes of most problems like crime, violence, unemployment, divorce, and financial insecurity.

When a person has an unhealthy life style, one of the first things that will be noticed is the lack of motivation. One also experiences procrastination, which means that one does not put in enough effort into something. Poor concentration is another symptom of an unhealthy life style. People often do not pay enough attention to things such as papers, projects, bills, and other daily requirements. Sloppiness is another problem that can be observed in an unhealthy lifestyle, for instance, when people use bad language, improper hygiene, and slovenliness in general.

Adorno believed that there are three main elements of unhealthy lifetimes, which include emotional immaturity, faulty sexual activities, and the total disorganization of the whole life style. These elements lead to the "degeneration of the culture." According to him, these conditions are socially established and have been inherited through generations.

According to him, there is need to change the lifestyles and values that are currently being followed by most people. This is called the "deconstructive movement." It is important to change unhealthy lifestyles and then adapt a healthy lifestyle. Changing a life style will not be successful, unless it is combined with new goals and activities.
