Are some fashion and beauty trends bad for your health?

Fashion and beauty trends can cause many health hazards, from hampered blood circulation to cancer, according to Dr. Suresh Rengasamy, a specialist at the Medeor 24x7 Hospital in Dubai.

“Trends such as tight skinny jeans, while flattering to the figure, can also hamper your blood circulation, cause urinary tract infections, and in men, affect sperm production,” Dr. Rengasamy said.

His judgment was confirmed by a recent study from Chile's Universidad Andres Bello, which found that persistent mechanical pressure exerted by tight trousers can impair circulation if worn for long periods of time.

Dr. Rengasamy also states that tight clothing - everything from jeans to belts and shapewear - can cause problems like acid reflux and heartburn. Because they put pressure on the stomach, they push the stomach acid up through the lower part of the esophagus, where it meets the stomach, causing heartburn.

In addition, women who wear tight jeans for a few days in a row are more susceptible to urinary tracts infections, the doctor revealed.

Accessories such as high heels and oversized bags have also been linked to shoulder and lower back pain, damaged tendons, and knee pain.

In terms of beauty trends, Dr. Rengasamy explains that the chemicals that are used in nail polishes, lipsticks, shampoos, and deodorants include harmful chemicals like sulphates, parabens, and lead.

Scientists also have found chemicals, particularly those used in some hair dyes, that react with tobacco smoke and other pollutants in the air to form N-nitrosamines, which are cancer-causing compounds.
