Retractable Door Screen 101

Posted by johnpreston on December 22nd, 2015

Perhaps you’ve seen homes with a French door screen door installed and wondering what it is for. There are a lot of screen doors, but generally they are hinged and cover a door and have the same purpose: while the design varies, all of them have a mesh screen to prevent pests and insects from entering the house.

Benefits

The primary benefit of retractable sliding door screens is they not only keep insects out, but it allows you to open the door and enjoy the view outside. What makes retractable and sliding screens attractive is they can disappear when not in use because of their casing and housing.
These casings are mounted in different ways, such as an inside mount that is flushed with the door frame or a surface mount that is set on the door frame’s surface. There are also custom screen doors that allow you to build a casing within the walls so the casing and screen can recess completely. These custom doors are becoming more common and can be designed specifically to fit your door.

In addition, some of these screen doors have special safety features that slow it down during retraction, preventing the screen door from suddenly slamming and injuring someone.

Designs and Functionality

Apart from keeping insects at bay, these screen doors are also versatile and can be used on patios, single doors, double doors, garage doors and more. The different designs also mean you can use these in modern style homes. Most of these retractable  doors have a spring loaded roller that works similarly to a window blind, with the difference being the roller is vertically set when used on doors.

The material used on these screens are joined to the roller while the opposing side is connected onto a siding bar on the bottom and upper tracks. It is the bar that moves to close or open the screen, and the bar is typically held in place by a magnetic closure. There are different kinds of mesh fabric options including solar screen, pet resistant, fiberglass and more.

A retractable door screen may be motorized or run manually, though the motorized ones are usually for large doors. If you are going to buy one of these, check the product specs and make certain that it fits your door. There are a lot of companies that manufacture these screens so take a look at the best options before committing to one.
