Food Allergies: Causes, Symptoms And Treatment

As per a recent study, more than 50 million Americans suffer with one or the other kind of allergy. Out of these 50 million, approx. 4-6% suffers with food allergies. It includes people from all walks of life right from kids to adults. The symptoms of food allergies can be easily diagnosed in infants and children, however, as per some researches and studies these can appear at any age. You may develop an allergy to a food item you might have been eating all your life.

A food allergy can be defined as an overreaction from your immune system to any normal food substance or food. Your system may classify it as a danger and trigger a safety response. Some allergies have tendency to be transferred from one generation to another, however, whether your allergies will be shared by siblings or passed on to next generation it cannot be predicted by any expert. The initial symptoms of any allergy may vary from time to time. Any food substance that triggered a small reaction initially may cause a severe reaction on some other occasion.

These included eggs, milk, tree nuts, pea nuts, shellfish, fish, soy, and wheat. Some specific seeds like mustard and sesame have also known to cause allergies in certain parts of the world.

Food allergy reactions mainly influence subject’s respiratory tract, cardiovascular system, gastrointestinal tract, and skin. Some common symptoms include wheezing, shortness of breath, hives, vomiting, stomach cramps, trouble in swallowing, hoarse and tight throat, weak pulse, swelling in tongue, dizziness, blue or pale coloring of skin, circulatory collapse or shock, and repetitive cough. The worst reaction is anaphylaxis that impairs respiration and sends the subject’s body into shock. Some of these symptoms may take an hour or two to surface while some others may appear after six to eight hours.

The best cure to this condition is prevention. Once the allergy has been diagnosed, the best food allergy treatment is to avoid the specific substance which triggers the allergic reaction. Children may show food allergy to items like peanuts, eggs, and milk while adults may develop repelling responses to vegetable and fruits pollens, fish, shellfish, tree nuts, and pea nuts. As per some previous researches, feeding small babies with solid food at a very early stage may promote food allergies. The real reasons behind these allergies are yet to be found out, till then you may consider precaution as the best food allergy treatment.
