Sleep in Comfort with a Modern Japanese Bed

Like the traditional Japanese platform bed, the contemporary platform bed has a wooden frame and several rows of evenly distributed, wooden slats that take the place of an ill-advised box spring. This design allows the bottom of the mattress to have plenty of ventilation, whereas a box spring—which is also cumbersome to move—interferes with this necessary aeration.

Japan’s long history of influence from Buddhism, Zen Buddhism in particular, has infused certain principles and values into the nation’s general character. Simplicity is one of those principles, and one way that it shows up is through a Western notion or value referred to as less is more, which means that the less you do or the less you add to something, the more its essence shines through. You could think of this as weeding a garden, and yet that doesn’t mean that complexity lacks equal value; it just means that we always have a choice, and sometimes that choice is a balance between the two.

Because of the materials used in construction, because of the simplicity of construction, and because of its association with Eastern philosophy and its reverence for Nature, Japanese beds, and Japanese Style bed in general, are often identified with the Green movement and ecological values. In addition because they work with any style of mattress or futon, one can choose the most comfortable sleeping style that matches ones individual preference.

As a result, furniture companies, big and small, all across the world, are turning Green by embracing ecological practices in the materials they use, the way they construct and design their merchandize and in the way that they manage their businesses and support their employees
