You'll discover that it requires a lot of patience and time to build your skill level up to the maximum level. You will have to catch about 3000 fish to get from start to finish.

You can skill up your fishing from 1 to 700 in any fishable water. This means you can stand in Orgrimmar all day long and get skillups on your fishing at the same rate as you would in a higher level zone. What decides your skillups is the number of successful catches. From level 1 to 75 you will get a skillpoint on pretty much every successful catch.

How do you catch a Fish?

First, visit any trainer in the main cities of old Azeroth - just ask a guard, and learn Fishing Apprentice. Or you can learn fishing at your garrison's Fishing Shack.

If you fish at open water in Draenor, your first catch will be [Fishing Guide to Draenor] (can't get this at garrison's pond). Use this scroll, and it will put your maximum skill up to 700, so you don't have to visit your trainer again. If you are below level 90 and you can't start fishing at Draenor, then don't forget to visit your fishing trainer when you reach skill 75, 150, 225, 375, 450, and 525!

Go to the nearest water, find the fishing skill icon in your spell book (P) at the profession tab, drag this icon to somewhere on your action bar. Stand in front of the lake/river and press the fishing button. Mouse over the lure in the water, and when it splashes, right click on it. Repeat this several hundred times.

Where to fish?

You should level your fishing at Draenor, there you won't catch any junk even with Fishing skill 1. You will catch fish like [Small Fat Sleeper].

The higher your effective fishing skill, the more likely you are to catch larger sizes of fish like [Fat Sleeper]. Small, Normal and Enormous sizes will contain different volumes of Flesh (example: [Fat Sleeper Flesh]), and that Flesh will be used in cooking, alchemy, and in first aid recipes.

If you are not level 90, or you don't have access to Draenor, then you can simply fish anywhere else. You will mostly catch junk, but your fishing skill will increase if you catch something, it does not matter if it's a fish or some junk.

Important! Don't fish at your garrison's pond if you don't have a level 2 Fishing Shack. You can't catch normal sized fish with a level 1 Fishing Shack. And when you reach 600, you should leave your garrison unless you have a level 3 fishing building, else you can't catch Enormous size fishes.
