How to write an effective op-ed

Op-ed is used to reflect opinions of an author or group often being written by a subject matter expert or otherwise notable person with the qualification to have an opinion. Writing the best op-ed is a great way to share your opinions and build your authority as a writer. Below are few tips for writing a strong and convincing op-ed piece.

1: Can start with a hook Since your reader is going to decide within the few lines whether or not the piece is worth reading for them. So, it is a good idea to start by introducing the issue along with the story that personalizes it. Be precise and make sure the hook is relevant to the issue, then get to work on actually making your argument. You should also place your main point at the top so readers won’t miss the important part of your argument.

2: Present relevant data and evidence – You must have evidence to support your argument and also make sure to only include the most relevant points. You would be having limited time and space, so you need to be able to weed out the critical evidence from the less relevant details. This skill will make your writing stronger and your argument more effective.

3: Keep it simple and short – Make sure you stick your opinion clearly and quickly, back it up with facts and examples, then finish up. If your op-ed is longer than 700 words, additives likely will not consider using it. They will ask you to revise, rewrite or edit your manuscript. When it comes to writing op-ed and blocks, use short sentences and clear words.

4: Audience – Almost everything in your article from what type of language you use to your tone, depends on your audience. If you are writing a piece for a children's magazine, they are going to read differently. The best way to familiarise yourself with the audience is to read pieces that have already been published and the outlet you are writing for or wishing to write for.
