Oilfield Acidizing Helps Production Flow

Posted by Chemplex on January 16th, 2016

Hydraulic fracturing is a highly effective method for accessing oil and natural gas deposits trapped deep within the earth inside layers of shale rocks. This process has become highly popular across the country and beyond because of its ability to make nontraditional oil and gas producing regions viable sources for natural resource recovery. While the process primarily involves the use of water and sand to help break apart shale rock, sometimes chemicals are also required to make a production site flow as intended. Oilfield acidizing, for example, may be necessary to help ensure a healthy flow of the desired resource.

Oilfield acidizing is a stimulation process that takes place after a well has been put in place. In the process, acid, typically hydrochloric, is injected into the formation at a high pressure. The acid flow etches the facture faces, enabling the formation of channels for production. It also serves as an agent to assist with propping after the fracture closes.

Oilfield acidizing is generally performed to help ensure a steady flow of natural gas or oil from a production site. The idea is to ensure that as much resource recovery occurs from the site before it is closed and operations move elsewhere. While it is vital for enhancing production and lessening the impacts and needs for creating other wells, the process isn’t an easy one. Acidizing can also lead to the creation of wormholes that can create leakoff. This is where oilfield chemical companies come into play. Their expertise in chemicals, such as fluid-loss additives, can assist in bridging wormholes to ensure desired flow.

Hydraulic fracturing enables people to access natural resources from areas that have been traditionally considered inaccessible. Processes like oilfield acidizing enable production companies to ensure proper recovery of the resources people need for everyday life, such as oil to fuel vehicles and natural gas to warm homes.
