Ron Virmani : Visiting Zagreb, Croatia

Posted by Ron Virmani on January 18th, 2016

Visiting Zagreb, Croatia written: At first I was hesitant to visit Zagreb when a good friend of mine, Ron Virmani, suggested it. Croatia is not as popular as a tourist destination as nearby European tourist traps like Athens or Paris, so I didn't really feel like it was the best place to go for my vacation. Little did I know how wrong I would be. Zagreb is a bustling metropolis that did not have the overly-touristy feel of other European cities and my experience there opened my eyes about hidden cities that are easily overlooked by travelers like myself.

Favorite Places
What I love about Zagreb is that it has a faint, medieval feel to it. This is probably because the city was fortunate enough to escape the last Balkan war relatively untouched. Ron Virmani suggested that we book a hotel near the old quarter so landmarks are easily within reach and I'm glad we followed his advice. I love the details that I saw at the old medieval quarter where I got to see old buildings, museums and galleries as well as theaters. There is no shortage of culture in this city. We visited the Museum Mimara, which houses art by Raphael and Rembrandt. Another interesting place to see was the Mirogoj, a unique cemetery that is home to Greek Orthodox, Jewish, Muslim and Catholic dead. This is the only cemetery of its kind, making it a must-see if you ever visit the city.

Good Eats in Zagreb
Ron Virmani suggested that we visit Gradski Podrum for our first meal in the city. We were famished when we arrived and so the heavy, comfort-food fare of this local favorite satisfied our hunger perfectly. Located in the main square, this place is known for national dishes that are hearty and affordable. We also got to try upscale fare at the Restaurant Hrvatski Kulturni Klub which is located inside the Art and Craft Museum. I loved the fresh oyster and the steak that were also relatively cheap for European standards.

Best Time to Visit
Ron Virmani suggested that we visit during the spring or summer so we could take advantage of the fresh and balmy weather. It did not disappoint. We loved how we could walk around at any time of the day without having to worry about harsh sunlight. However, Ron Virmani also told us that even if we chose to go in the winter, we can still enjoy the bustling city, since people like to go out in the winter and socialize as a way to keep the cold at bay. We will be sure to visit this lovely city again in the wintertime and see how different and magical it could be by then.
