Buying Flower Pots ? What You Must Know

Posted by kamal on January 23rd, 2016

Flower potsare more than just containers because when properly set and put together, will enhance the appearance of your garden, large or small. Finding the right one could be difficult especially with options like terra cotta, metal, plastic and other materials available, so here are some tips.

Primary Considerations

Factory direct pottery are available in different types; metal planters hold water better and less porous than wood and other materials. Plastic containers on the other hand are light and portable, but this doesn’t make them suitable for large plants. What this means is when choosing containers, you have to assess the materials used carefully.

The size of the container must be large enough not just for your flowers but also spacious to handle the amount of soil you want to use. Bear in mind too that plant roots can expand as it grows: generally speaking you need to get a container that has room for the roots to grow and spread.

The Materials

The materials vary as mentioned earlier, with wood and metal quite popular owing to their low cost and versatility. Wood is porous by nature and because of this offers excellent drainage. Furthermore, wood is not vulnerable to rust like metal, so there’s no need to worry about rust. The problem with wood of course is they could be too porous and lead to the growth of mildew.

Consider the Seasons

If you’re going to leave your flowers and plants outdoors majority of the time, it’s best to go with those made of stone, cement or wood, with the large ones especially effective for changing weather. If you’re going to opt for terra cotta or ceramic, get the most durable types you can find so they don’t crack up when it gets cold. If you are concerned with their durability, make sure to store them indoors before winter sets in.

Drainage

Another thing you have to account for is drainage: water is good for plants and flowers, but too much of it leads to waterlogged roots. Here’s a quick tip: if the pot doesn’t come with any holes, it is meant for decorative use only, i.e. holding pots for plants and flowers.

If you’re going to buy wholesale flower pots online, do so only from a reputable supplier: as any gardener will tell you, using the wrong pot can lead to unpleasant results for your plants. Just as you would be careful when it comes to buying flowers, the same approach should be done for your pots.
