NFL London: The dolphins are hesitant on the new Xavien Howard contract

Brian Flores has consistently described Xavien Howard's mini-training camp as a unique situation where the veteran cornerback is believed to be pursuing a new contract. The dolphins seem in no rush to meet their demands.

ESPN.com Cameron Wolfe pointed out that Howard's camp was approaching the dolphins, saying the 5-year veteran hopes to get a contract at least more than the new contract being paid by teammate Byron Jones. This hiatus stems from the fact that the team gave Howard a contract that set a record for cornerbacks two years ago. Howard's five-year .25 million contracts have four years left.

The dolphins paying Howard back so soon are sure to set an unusual precedent. While the first 10-INT player in the NFL's 13 seasons has proven to be a stable ballhawk, he has dealt with injuries and problems outside of the game field. The household battery charge for Howard was eventually given up, but the Dolphins solved this problem in the 2019 season. During this season, the veteran corner kick missed 11 games. Howard also missed 9 rookies and 4 games in 2018. Of course, Howard led the NFL with 7 INTs in 12 games in 2018.

After Howard's .1 million annual contract extension, the market for cornerbacks has changed for the first time in many years. Jones, Tre’Davious White, Marlon Humphrey, and Jalen Ramsey signed more people than Howard in 2020; Ramsey's million AAV deal leads every corner. In March last year, the Dolphins signed a five-year contract with Jones worth .5 million. Jones's trade has a full margin of million and leads all corners in the NFL. Howard signed a contract by a full margin of US.2 million, placing it in ninth place.

Miami can now choose to restructure Howard's deal to offer additional bonuses, or the team can put together an incentive plan for its largest revenue producer. In the final year of Flores and the Patriots, the team reached a compromise with Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski. Also in 2018, the Broncos gave Chris Harris a reward plan. In 2019, after Denver signed Kareem Jackson to make him the highest-paid DB on the team, the team gave Harris a raise. But it is a contract that expires at the end of the season, so only part of Harris's past situation applies to Howard's situation.

For the past year, the Dolphins discussed Howard in trade but set a high asking price for him. If Howard didn't attend the training camp, it would be interesting to see if they would eventually renegotiate trade talks. CBA limits its choices at that time on the calendar.
