Alprazolam Tablets Belong to the Benzodiazepine Class Of Medications

Alprazolam Tablets belong to the benzodiazepine class of medications. Alprazolam is most commonly used in short-term management of anxiety disorders. It is approved for the treatment of generalized anxiety disorder and panic disorder. It is a very common tranquilizer that is prescribed to patients for short-term relief from stress and anxiety. It is also used to relax the patients before certain procedures such as dental procedures. However, side effects are quite unpleasant and the patients have to be prepared for possible withdrawal symptoms when they discontinue taking alprazolam.

The common symptoms of alprazolam include muscle relaxation, drowsiness, disorientation, dizziness, and difficulty in breathing. Although these symptoms can be unpleasant, most patients do not report feeling anything different when taking Alprazolam Tablets. There is some speculation that alprazolam has anxiolytic properties. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved only three benzodiazepines, alprazolam, lorazepam, and oxazepam, as effective treatments for generalized anxiety disorder. However, they have comparable efficacy and side effects.

For patients who do not wish to take estrogen, some alternatives to benzodiazepines that have fewer side effects include mefenamic acid and trihexyphenidyl. Grapefruit-containing foods or grapefruit juice may increase side effects (such as slowed breathing or drowsiness) of Alprazolam. If possible avoid taking Alprazolam Tablets with grapefruit or grapefruit juice, as well as do not increase intake of grapefruit.

Another concern with benzodiazepines is that they can lead to addiction, especially in the case of higher doses or prolonged use. The primary mechanism of action of Alprazolam is blocking neurotransmitter receptors that enter the brain and trigger calming responses. When the patient becomes habituated to Alprazolam Tablets, the possibility of addiction increases because the medication alters the brain's chemistry. Because of this, patients should always avoid taking alprazolam tablets with prescription sedatives or medications that exhibit strong stimulant properties. Alprazolam tablets are available under the following different brand names; Xanax XR, Niravam, and Xanax.
