John Scott boosted All-Star ratings, named NHL's No. 1 star of week

As if taking over the All-Star weekend and being the MVP of the game wasn't enough, the NHL announced on Monday that Scott was named its No. 1 star of the week thanks to his performance in Nashville on Saturday and Sunday.

Every Monday the NHL names three stars for their performance over the past week, and this week Scott finished ahead of Columbus Blue Jacktets forward Cam Atkinson (he had a puppy hat trick a week ago) and Buffalo Sabres rookie Jack Eichel who has started to play his way back into Calder Trophy consideration.

The crazy thing about Scott being named the top star of the week for his All-Star performance is that the NHL completely ignored his presence at the game in the months and weeks leading up to it. They downplayed the voting results that had him at the top, tried to talk him out of playing, and did something they never do when it comes to the fan votes: They never announced how many votes the leading vote-getters actually received.

Voted in as the captain of the Pacific Division team, Scott likely won the fan vote given the popularity of the online fan campaign.

His presence had a significant impact on how many people tuned in to watch. NBC's ratings for the game were 24 percent higher than they were for the game last year. There are only two possible reasons for such a huge boost. One was the change in format. The other was the presence of Scott.

It is also worth pointing out that Scott isn't even on an NHL roster at the moment. After the Arizona Coyotes traded him to the Montreal Canadiens just two weeks before the All-Star Game, they sent him to the St. John's IceCaps of the American Hockey League where he will report now that the All-Star game has been completed.

The IceCaps are also looking to capitalize on Scott's success this weekend and are selling his jersey at the team store.
