Have you had a Certified Safety Professional to come andaudit your safety programs lately? Asafety program is the framework of your facility. It is the go to guide book for all questionsrelated to safety. It can covereverything from drug testing protocol to how training is conducted and howoften. The program can be huge andextensive, but it is your number one defense when OHSA comes knocking on yourdoor. It is true that currently there is no one set standardsafety program that span across all industries. OSHA does not have a safety program guide. They DO have a list of do’s and don’ts thatyou as an Operations Manager or HR Director do not have time to sift through. That is why you want to hire a CertifiedSafety Professional (CSP) to come by and do an audit of your facility and yourcurrent safety program.

A CSP is anindividual that has a bachelor’s degree in safety and has had many years’experience in the safety industry. Thereis a standardized test they must take to become a CSP and the test is brutal. So what types of programs will be needed to run yourfacility? There are programs foreverything it seems like. A fun one ispaint. Typically if there will be a lotof painting happening then you will have a paint booth. They look different from plant to plant butessentially they are an area where youcan paint and expose the rest of the warehouse or employees to the fumes of thepaint. One safety aspect of the paintbooth is ventilation. Is your paintbooth properly ventilated? The CSP canmake that determination, along with respirators. If you have a paint booth or spray booth typically you needsome type of ventilation and sometimes the employees need to wear respiratorsfor protection. A CSP will perform atype of Industrial Hygiene monitoring to determine if the air in the paint orspray booth warrants its users to utilize respirators.

If the results of the air monitoring showrespirators are required then the CSP can help devise a RespiratorProgram. Do not just hand out paper masks and ask your employees towear them in an attempt to skip the monitoring. If OSHA came by and asked an employee if they were required to wear arespirator body safety harness and they answer yes, now OSHA wants to see your training program andwhy you choose that respirator. Call a local CSP to find out a) if you need a respiratorprogram, b) what type of respirators to use, and c) how to get a programwritten and your employees trained to use it.
