There will be an impressive presentation by Dr. Mike Gruntman on Intercept 1961. He will be sharing with us almost everything from Air Defence SA-1 to the Birth of Soviet Missile Defence AIAA Dinner Meeting which will take place on Tuesday, 16th of December 2016. It was on 4th of March 1961 that a Soviet steered missile was caught and it damaged the heading water head of an intermediate range ballistic missile (IRBM) SS-4 at the test location – Saryshagan situated in the Kazakhstan desert. Numerous fruitful intercepts took place, tiling the way for the rise of an influential political, military, scientific and industrial missile in the Soviet Union. By this time, a new lesson in the never ending contest between the defending and retaliation between the weapons and the armour had begun.

The remarkable non-nuclear devastation of a distant ballistic missile evidently fetched a place amid the most significant and substantial Soviet pioneers – on parity with the 1st intercontinental ballistic missile R-7 and non-natural satellite Sputnik in the year 1957. The 1st cosmonaut in the year 1961 was also able to bring in a quickly progressing field of missiles and space. The developments in Soviet weapons occupied a main role in modelling the defence programs and technologies at the time of the Cold War taking place. The presentation expresses a little identified story, grounded on a freshly printed book, of the 1st antiaircraft system SA-1 in the Soviet Union and the 1st intercept of an IRBM, giving rise to the Soviet missile defence.

Dr. Mike Gruntman is serving as a lecturer of astronautics at the University of Southern California (USC). His began his life from a child rising on the Tyuratam missile and space launch base to a proficient space physicist to the creator of a main space engineering education program in U.S. space industry. Then Mike also assisted as the founding chairman of this nationwide renowned astronautical engineering section at USC. He imparts courses in space systems and rocket propulsion at the university and other small courses (AIAA and ATI) for administration and the industry. Mike assisted as the Vice Chairman of the Los Angeles section of AIAA from the year 1996 to 1998. He is an Associate Fellow of AIAA. This definitely is going to be a not to be missed event and will provide you with a great amount of knowledge. So, make sure you are there!
