Getting Ready for Lap Band Surgery: What You Need to Know

Posted by Dr. Nick Nicholson on February 26th, 2016

Lap band surgery is an excellent choice for addressing obesity in a healthy way without involving the permanent alterations associated with gastric bypasses or sleeve gastrectomy procedures. While this surgical procedure is minimally invasive and largely reversible, there are some things patients need to know before the big day for surgery arrives.

Here are a few tips that can help make preparing for lap band surgery just a little bit easier:

  •          Adopting dietary changes – It’s not at all uncommon for people to be told they need to shed a few pounds before the surgery can actually be performed. Since dietary changes will become a must post-surgery, it’s just a good idea to get into the swing of things beforehand. Work with a doctor or dietician to create a healthy, smart diet plan for use before surgery to help shed a few necessary pounds in advance or prepare the body for post-band life. Once the surgery is completed, be sure to note any recommended dietary changes.
  •          Adopting lifestyle changes – While it might be difficult to take part in rigorous activity before surgical weight loss is realized, getting into the routine for moving on a regular basis can help. Speak with a healthcare provider about creating a pre-surgical exercise routine and touch base again after healing to gain post-surgical activity recommendations.
  •          Following pre-surgical rules – Once the appointment is made, take note of any instructions for the days leading up to surgery. If pre-op blood work is required, for example, get that scheduled and taken care of immediately. Also pay attention to any orders related to food or drinking prior to the procedure. Generally, liquids and foods will be off limit from the night before surgery until the procedure is completed.

The lap band procedure is a viable weight loss option for those who struggle with obesity and wish to avoid more permanent weight loss procedures. To get the most from this option, take care to prepare properly and follow through as advised.
