Advantages of the Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity Test

Concrete testing is a crucial step in any construction project. It is typically time consuming, especially in remote locations or where no samples can be taken from an existing structure for use with a compression testing machine test. If you are looking for a non-destructive way to test concrete, use ultrasonic pulse velocity test equipment. 

Ultrasonic pulse velocity testing is a non-destructive and non-invasive means to determine the integrity of concrete. It is used for determining the soundness of the material, and to qualitatively measure the characteristics of concrete. Hence, the test is an easier way to determine or inspect defects visible on the surface of a structure or within concrete. Ultrasonic pulse velocity test can be most useful when the structure has already been completed, but you need a way to verify the integrity of concrete without taking any samples that could destroy the finished product. 

This testing method is useful for high risk areas, too, such as oil and gas pipelines, seashore structures, and nuclear establishments. In an ultrasonic pulse velocity test, you can measure the velocity of the ultrasonic waves through the concrete to relate to the structures compressive strength. Ultrasonic wave velocity is directly proportional to the modulus of elasticity (density) of the material. In concrete, there is a direct empirical relation between the modulus of elasticity and compressive strength. 

Ultrasonic pulse velocity tests can determine the homogeneity of the material, detect the presence of internal imperfections, defects, cracks, and voids, and find changes in concrete that may occur over time due to cement hydration or any other reasons like chemical attack, frost, and fire damage. In is most basic sense, ultrasonic testing refers to 'time of flight', which is the time it takes for an ultrasonic pulse to arrive from one transducer to the other as it passes through a solid medium. 

Advanced ultrasonic pulse velocity equipment is flexible and can be used in various ways, depending on the placement of its transducers. For instance, the transducers may be placed in a manner where both ends directly meet, or they can be placed in a semi direct method when testing the corners of concrete. The indirect method of testing can be done when the transducers are placed on a similar concrete and the receiver gets the pulse after striking concrete molecules.
