Key components that determine the superiority of industrial fans

Fans provide an ambient environment in industrial settings and effectively ventilate prospective noxious areas to maintain productive working conditions. Some manufacturing industries, use industrial fans for material handling while others are designed to employ in exhausting corrosive, high temperature or hazardous gases from the process. Many industrial fans and blowers are designed for variety of airflow volumes and pressures, to meet the requirements of changing technology, customer expectations, and application requirements. The combination of a good thermal design, the device compliance, and optimal fan reliability build a robust and efficient ventilation system.

Industrial fans used in ventilation system has many parts in it, but performance depends mainly on the following key components:

• Bearings
Fan shaft bearing with excessively loose or overly tightened belts, uneven loading on the fan blades, device vibration, high operating temperatures, and improper lubrication are the critical issues that affect the fan bearings. Bearing failures are expensive affairs in industries, because this equipment is often critical to production process. The extension of bearing service life in industrial fans is a high priority issue because a total breakdown might cause in unplanned stops, unnecessary downtime and production losses.

• Belt system
Fans with belt system that are used in industrial and commercial sectors must have proper alignment and tensioning to maintain motor efficiency. Improper belt tension leads to belt failures and inefficient power transmission, causing possible premature motor failures. Properly installed and maintained belts on the electric motors result in decreased power consumption, longer belt life and improved machine up time.

• Blades and housing
The buildup of dust, fumes and other industrial matter on the blades and housing causes vibration, system imbalance and loss of capacity or reduced airflow. It is essential to keep industrial fans clean and properly balanced without material build-up especially if the air being removed comprises of abrasive, sticky or wet materials. Fans with proper design and housing offer high performance resulting in effective discharge of exhaust gases.

• Motors
Motors have tremendous impact on energy usage and those with operating voltage less than 10% of the recommended value ensure optimum performance. The only way to improve motor efficiency is to keep their operating conditions under rated electrical supply and equip them with proper lubrication. Over lubricating causes excessive heat within the motor which will have additional problems of negatively impacting on its efficiency resulting in higher operating costs.

• Dampers and louvers
Louvers and dampers, installed at outlet and inlet are integral components in the proper functioning of industrial air systems either to control the volume or to modulate the airflow when precise control is not critical. The material of dampers and louvers must be in compliance with the operating conditions so as to withstand the thermal stresses, severe dust loads, corrosion, and distortion. If the linkage connection to the dampers and louvers are not properly tightened and secured, it can affect the fan performance.

• Vibration isolators:
A mechanical disturbance generated internally by the fan due to unbalance, torque pulsations or fan blades result in unacceptable high noise level vibrations that may sometime lead to machinery failure. To avoid vibration problems typical flexible connectors and isolation foundations are employed to keep apart fan vibrations from the building and rest of the ventilation system.
