Non-Convertible Binders; Used In Various End-Use Industries

Posted by Sachin B on July 15th, 2021

Non-convertible binders are those that are polymerized prior to an application but dissolved or mixed in a medium that evaporates after the coating is applied. These binders are composed of organic materials such as resins, varnishes, and other synthetic polymers. There is an increasing demand for non-convertible binders in developed and developing economies due to the rapid growth of the construction industry. Moreover, over the years, the demand for non-convertible binders has increased, owing to increasing urbanization and industrialization due to increasing global population worldwide. According to the United Nations, around 55% of the world’s population lives in urban areas, and the number is expected to increase to 68% by 2050.

Non-convertibles binders are also called hard binders. They are made of different materials, such as plastics, fibers, resins, and other man-made fibers. The non-convertible binders don't depend on mechanical reactions for the formation of permanent papers. In spite of its great advantages, the non-convertible binders experience certain disadvantages too. They are mostly made of plastics and they are known for their low melting point and chemical resistance. However, they are vulnerable to bonding with solvents. So, they cannot form a good bond with solvents like acetone, meth acryl, benzene, toluene etc. The solvent may also react with some plasticizers that are available in the market.
