The Advantages of Blood Flow Limitation Many clients in our physical therapy center are not able to lift heavy weights in some cases because of pain, immobilization, or because of surgical treatment. Blood Circulation Restriction (BFR) Training can be a fantastic rehab tool due to the fact that it enables patients to enjoy the benefits of an intense heavy weight-lifting session while only needing the client to perform low-to moderate-intensity training.

Throughout BFR training, a client or athlete performs high repetitions of a particular workout while wearing a band or cuff around their upper arm or upper leg with usage of light resistance. The following are physical modifications that can happen secondary to Blood Flow Limitation Training: Improved muscular strength Increased muscular cross sectional area Avoidance of muscular atrophy Development of more recent and much healthier blood vessels Decreased risk of heart disease Enhanced bone mineral density BFR Causes Muscles to Work Harder With flexible BFR training, BFR bands are positioned near one's arms and/or upper legs.

Elastic BFR bands partly limit the venous blood (oxygen lacking blood flowing from the limbs back to the heart) return. This makes the muscles work even more difficult to pump the blood back to the heart! BFR workouts include durations of exercise and rest. During the periods of exercise, blood is rapidly flowed from our heart, to our arteries, to our limbs, to our veins and back to the heart.

The muscles in the limb need to work even harder to pump the venous blood past the BFR bands back to the heart. At the local cellular level, this dam impact produces a disruption of homeostasis lower oxygen levels in the muscle cells, acidic muscle cells, and other modifications that make the muscles tiredness quickly, just like they would with heavy weights.
