How to Choose the Right Furnace Air Filters

Posted by AirZone HVAC Services inc. on July 23rd, 2021

The right furnace filters will help keep your HVAC system parts clean and running efficiently. In addition, the system also cleans the air coming into your home. Thus you can prolong the life and health of your heating and air conditioning and breathe easier by periodically replacing your furnace filter.

It is the air filter that keeps the entire central air system working efficiently. A dirty filter can restrict airflow, prevent the system from working properly, and eventually cause an appliance to break down.

So, you can't just pick up my furnace air filter and, done. There are some factors to consider, such as those mentioned below, to ensure good performance.

1 – Choose the right size filter

For the correct size filter, check your furnace manual, or check an existing filter to determine the size. The size of most filters is boldly displayed in several places on the surface. If necessary, you can also use a measuring tape to determine the size. When buying a new filter, take your old filter with you or write down the measurement, so you buy right.

2 – Look for MERV ratings

The mechanical air filters carry a design to prevent dust, debris and other small particles from spreading throughout your home. The efficacy of a mechanical air filter is measured in the MERV rating, or Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value. The standard industry rating measures the filter's ability to trap particles ranging from 3.0 to 10.0 microns. Most residential air filters are stamped with a MERV rating between 1 and 12. A higher rating means the filtering of more particles.

3 – Pleated or Non-Pleated filter

When comparing the two, pleated furnace filters are more efficient and last longer than ordinary fibreglass non-pleated filters. Pleated filters provide a bigger surface area to capture contaminants and pollutants. They also have small pores to capture small particles while allowing clean air to flow freely.

4 – High-efficiency air filter

The synthetic polyester material is used to manufacture high-efficiency air filters. It is very effective at trapping dust, pollen, mould and other irritant particles. These filters can remove up to 85% of pollutants in the air and have a MERV rating between 14 and 16.

5 – Filter thickness

The configuration of your system will determine the thickness of the furnace air filter you can use. The thickness of a filter can range from 1'' to 5''. As a general rule, a thicker furnace filter (5'') will last longer and maybe more efficient.
