Choosing reptiles as pets is not a very conventional choice. However, those few who are in love with reptiles and wishes to keep them as a pet have very rewarding experiences. One of the most popular choices of reptile pets are the Big large lizard pets. Monitor lizards are big sized lizards which are known for their intelligence. They are curious and sometimes show more intelligence than mammals. If raised with proper care and patience they can make some of the best pets.

There are a variety of big lizards available and you should choose the one according to the space you can give them and the amount of care you can give them. Komodo dragons are the largest of the monitor lizards but it is not a wise option to choose them as pets. It is for the simple reason that their bites can cause blood poisoning and they are best left in the wild.

However if you are a starter, you can start off with varieties like Geckos, Bearded Dragons and iguanas. If you are feeling a bit more adventurous then go for the water monitors, the Nile monitor, blackthroat monitor and whitethroat monitor. With proper care they can become very docile and entertaining pets with whom you will have proud bond. Here are a few ways in which you can care for your big lizard-

  • Most of the big lizards can grow to the size of 3 feet and beyond. It is for this reason that you should have a lot of space available before going for Big large lizard pets. Some lizards can grow as big as 5 to 6 feet. If you do not have so much space or are not comfortable with lizards of that huge size, you can always go for the smaller ones, which grow up to, 18 inches long.

However, with every lizard you have to provide them with an aquarium twice its size so that it does not feel crowded. A lizard when feeling crowded will become stressed and will eventually stop eating and then it will fall sick. If you do not have enough space to spare then it will be better not to get a lizard. Lizards also love climbing so the aquarium should also be sufficiently tall for the lizards.

  • Lizards unlike snakes need food on a daily basis. Most of the lizards prefer insects and small animals like mice. So you have to provide them with fresh food every day. You should never allow the leftover food to rot in the aquarium as it may make the lizard sick from bacterial infection.

Moreover, there should also be provision for fresh and clean water. If you give them water in a large enough dish then it will be easier for them to soak themselves in the water. Good soaking helps to make the shedding process easier.

  • Lizard pets need a lot of UV rays. So place the aquarium in a place where it can get enough sunlight. Install heat lamps and UV lights in the aquarium too.

If you do not prefer lizard pets you can also opt for Large Giant ant farm which is pretty engaging and interesting as well.

Large Giant ant farm is a nice enough project which will help your children to witness the workings of an ant colony. Big large lizard pets are also quite an interesting option of pets. If you can provide enough care and attention they will be as docile and loving as any other pets.
