What is Chinese Medicine?

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), also called Oriental medicine, dates back thousands of years. Its basic principle states that Qi, or a life-force called Qi, moves through the body in rhythms called chi (or qi) and swells. Any disruption to the flow or chi could lead to illness or disease. This principle is the basis of all Chinese medicines.

One of the most important concepts of traditional Chinese medicine is yin and yang. Yin, or female energy, represents all the feminine aspects of human nature: tenderness, beauty, and love, whereas yang, which is male energy, represents strength, power, and strength. In ancient times, Yin was considered separate entities. In fact, the concept of yin and yang was developed by Chinese astrologers so that people would not become ill because of an imbalance between the two. Modern medicine recognizes the importance of both yin and Yang in determining a person's health. Modern medical knowledge states that yin and Yang must be present and balanced within the body to ensure health.

An oriental medicine practitioner's goal is to restore the yin-yang harmony in the patient. This can be achieved through acupuncture, herbal formulas, massage therapy, and herbal medicines. To help a patient achieve balance, an oriental medicine practitioner may use herbs such as ginseng, long tzi, and panax ginseng. To maximize the benefits for each individual, these herbs are combined in special formulations.

Traditional Chinese medicine has long associated Acupuncture with Chinese herbs and Chinese herbs. Acupuncture can be used to promote overall health and unblock energy flow (qi). There are nine distinct meridians that run throughout the body and each meridian is said to correspond to an organ or part of the body that needs treating. Ailments and diseases can arise when energy doesn't flow properly.

Traditional Chinese medicine says that qi, or your life force, is essential to good health. To do this, you should avoid alcohol, drugs, smoking, and other things that can deplete your body's Qi. To strengthen your body's defense system, you must eat healthy foods and exercise regularly. In Chinese culture, obesity is often associated with poor health. Chinese doctors recommend acupuncture for patients with obesity or weight problems.

Traditional Chinese medicine (tcm) believes that there are seven bodies or yin that are associated with natural healing. These seven bodies are called Shen (visiting), Jia, Shen(metal), Shen (“mind”), Shen (“metal”), Fuxi (fire), Wu (water) and yin (yang). These bodies can become out of balance and cause illness.

The goal of traditional Chinese medicine (tcm) is to use the natural healing properties found in plants and animals to treat ailments and improve health. I am also including acupuncture in my holistic approach to illness. Many tcm methods also include herbal remedies like Mistletoe and Chinese Wolfberry, Red Peony and Licorice Root. Many of these herbs are also available in your local grocery store's health foods section or the health food vitamin aisle.

Because chinese medicine are wary of acupuncture and other alternative methods of medicine, it can be difficult for the uninitiated to seek out an acupuncturist. Fortunately, there are many certified acupuncture and tcm practitioners available today. Many more can be found online. Before choosing a practitioner, make sure that they have been trained by a certified tcm practitioner, that they provide the proper training for the modalities they practice, and that they follow strict guidelines on providing care and on collecting payment from clients.
