Usages of CoQ10 Supplements for Heart Disease

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), also known as Q10, vitamin Q10, ubiquinone, or ubidecarenone, is a natural antioxidant synthesised by the body. It is particularly concentrated in the mitochondria which are tiny energy producing centres present in every cell of the human body. Mitochondria provide approximately 90 percent of the energy that fuels cellular activity and helps one stay alive.

CoQ10 is an important participant in metabolic chemical reactions that generate energy within the cells. Though found in every cell of the body, its concentration is higher in organs with higher energy requirements such as kidneys, liver, and heart. The natural antioxidant properties of CoQ10 help in detecting, destroying and neutralising free radicals which cause cardiovascular problems like heart disease. It comes in two forms – ubiquinol, which is the active antioxidant form, and ubiquinone, the oxidized form, which the body partially converts into ubiquinol.

CoQ10 is found in many foods. The best sources are oily fish and organ meats, such as the beef liver. Vegetarian sources include whole grains and vegetable oils. It has become a popular dietary supplement because of its role in the human body. In fact, medical studies have proven that CoQ10 aids as a supplement because of its function in oxygen utilisation and energy production, particularly in the heart muscle cells. Researchers believe that CoQ10 may improve heart-related conditions as it can prevent the formation of blood clots and improve energy production in cells, apart from its benefits as an antioxidant.

It also promotes arterial health, supports a strong heartbeat, and helps maintain healthy blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Coenzyme Q10 benefits the gums, brain and skin. It may even be helpful in preventing migraines and delaying hearing loss.

The human body produces less quantities of CoQ10 with age. Deficiencies may result in certain metabolic disorders. It has been found that people with conditions like diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, and heart problems tend to have low levels of CoQ10 in their bodies. Supplemental CoQ10 will help replenish and reduce deficiencies.

CoQ10 is available as a dietary supplement in several forms today. Since CoQ10 is fat soluble, soft gelcaps (which contain CoQ10 mixed with oil) are a much better choice as compared to tablets and capsules (containing powdered CoQ10). It is also available as an oral spray. There is no established standard dose, therefore one should go by the doctor’s recommendations.

CoQ10 supplements likely improve symptoms and reduce the risk of future cardiac attacks when combined with regular medications. They are especially important for people who take cholesterol-lowering statin drugs, which further deplete CoQ10 stores in the body.
