CHICAGO — Toxicology results released on Friday for the gunman who killed five students and himself at Northern Illinois University in February appear to confirm that he had stopped taking his medications before the shooting and was not using illegal drugs or alcohol.

The results, released by university officials, show that the gunman, Steven P. Kazmierczak, had “minute amounts” of the anti-anxiety drug alprazolam, also known as Xanax, along with nicotine and traces of cold medicine.

“The combination isn’t particularly unusual,” said William A. Scheftner, chairman of psychiatry at the Rush University Medical Center here.

The tests fail to answer questions about why a Northern Illinois graduate who was well liked by his professors would open fire in a lecture hall on the campus in DeKalb. Mr. Kazmierczak’s behavior would have xanax obj made more sense, Dr. Scheftner said, if he were using drugs like cocaine.

Mr. Kazmierczak’s girlfriend, Jessica Baty, told CNN that he had been taking Prozac, Xanax and a sleeping aid under a psychiatrist’s care.

Mr. Kazmierczak killed himself with a gunshot to the mouth, and the five victims died of single or multiple gunshot wounds, according to the DeKalb County results and the Winnebago County coroner, who performed an autopsy on one victim.

University officials released limited information from the autopsy and toxicology tests, saying neither the police nor the DeKalb coroner would be available for comment.
