The Mountain Goats are basically an American indie rock band which was created in Claremont in California by songwriter-singer John Darnielle. You will be surprised to know that this band is presently based in Durham which is located in North Carolina. In fact, for several years, the soul member of this band was Darnielle, in spite of the plural moniker. During 1990’s, this group of talented people were recognized for producing low-fidelity home recordings & releasing in cassette or vinyl 7” formats.  In fact, it was during 2002 in which this band have adopted different and polished approach, recording studio albums with a fully-equipped band, at the same time preserving organically emotional lyrical motifs as well. In 1995, most of that could be regarded as classic Mountain Goats conventions (song series, mythological themes,boom-box recording,Latin quotes) were left in favour of a more thematically focused & experimental sound. This period was also marked by Darnielle’s collaborations with other artists like Simon Joyner &Alastair Galbraith.

The band's 14^th studio albumwas released in 2012 “Transcendental Youth” and they played at Carnegie Hall in early 2013 in support of Hank Green &John Green in their "Evening of Awesome" performance. Surprisingly, All Hail West Texas was re-released on vinyl in July 2013. In fact, the band released their 15^th album on April, 2015 “Beat the Champ” again with Merge Records. Their latest album is basically a biographic concept album which is not different from “The Sunset Tree”. It is not directly & specifically about Darnielle. You will be surprised to know that the band’s music has also been featured in the famous Showtime television series Weeds.
