Neighborhood Spotlight: Squaw Valley

Posted by GrangerGroup on April 15th, 2016

Although Squaw Valley is a very small California town with a population of only 3,228 people and is comprised of just one neighborhood, it is very popular for its Squaw Valley Ski Resort and became famous as the site of the first live-televised Winter Olympics in 1960. In fact, Squaw Valley is also known as Olympic Valley.

Squaw Valley’s unique character is also shaped by the fact that it has more artists, people working in media, and designers than 90 percent of America’s communities! With lengthy commuting to regular jobs, Squaw Valley also has a large work force of telecommuters who work from home. Those numbers rank among the nation’s highest.

The Squaw Valley Ski Resort is the second largest of Lake Tahoe’s ski areas and one of the largest ski areas in the whole United States. It boasts 3,600 acres, six peaks, 34 chairlifts, and the only funitel in the nation. A funitel is an aerial lift that holds 20 to 30 people per cabin. Having joined forces with Alpine Meadows, the two resorts offer joint access to 6,200 acres, 43 lifts, and more than 270 trails.

At the ski resort is The Village at Squaw with its wide choice of shopping, restaurants, the Trilogy Spa, excellent lodging, and even fire pits for both snowy winter weather and chilly summer nights.

Olympic Museum

This museum, located at High Camp and with free admission with your Aerial Tram ride, highlights a collection of memorabilia including authentic Team USA uniforms and video presentations telling the numerous magical moments of the 1960 Winter Olympics.

Tahoe Treetop Adventure Park

The 2 1/2 hours of a challenging ropes obstacle course suspended from the tree tops with some ziplines mixed in has a number of courses for each level, like ski slopes. The ropes courses are up in the trees, from as low as 10 feet off the ground to as high as approximately 30 feet. The zip lines are short, some going to the ground while some go to platforms in the trees. If you don't want to participate, you can follow along and take pictures.

Those who are considering Lake Tahoe luxury real estate may decide to take advantage of the subdivisions, amenities, and lifestyle that Squaw Valley has to offer. Outdoor activities include bike paths, hiking trails, snowboarding, gondola rides, a scenic aerial tram to the top of the mountain, an ice skating rink, a swimming pool, and more. There is also roller skating, climbing on an outdoor or indoor rock wall, high-altitude disk golf, summer concerts, and popular wine and beer events.
