How to Create a Content Strategy in 4 Steps

Posted by Robert Hart on August 6th, 2021

A content strategy is the backbone of any website. It's what makes your site unique and stands out from all the others. But how can you create a successful one? Read on for four steps to creating a strong content strategy!

1) Define your goals

Before you can create a content strategy, you have to determine why the heck you're doing it in the first place.

What are your goals? Why do you want to build a content strategy? Are you trying to gain more traffic? Increase sales? Or maybe expand into an international market?

2) Determine who your audience is. Who are you targeting with your site? If you're a small business, it should be fairly easy to figure out your target demographic. Figure out how old they are, what gender, and what country/state/area they live in. This will make it much easier to create content.

3) Plan content types and frequency. Now's the time to brainstorm. Grab a notebook/journal or anything else that works for you, and start jotting down ideas. What types of content are you going to provide? Long-form articles? Short, snappy posts with lots of images? Maybe videos if your audience is on the younger side? Determine how often you want to post. If your site is based on a news-based concept, then you'll most likely be posting very frequently.

4) Create an editorial calendar. Now that you've got all of this information in front of you, it's time to figure out exactly when you need to post what. Make a table in your notebook or on the Word doc with your content types and their relevant deadlines.
