Most of the students are clueless about which stream to choose after class 10th. During class 9th and 10th, people start asking you this question too often. Everyone around you – parents, relatives, teachers, friends – keep asking you to decide on a stream soon.

Therefore, you need to think clearly about your career goals, aptitude, and interests and choose based on the assessment. Don’t panic if you don’t know the answer right now. Take one step at a time. Start with the basics and look at the stream choices you have. Then, let us discuss what subjects are offered in each of them.

Streams to choose in Class 11th

Most of the boards offer three streams that determine the courses and subjects you study in your 11th and 12th standards. The three streams after class 10th are as follows:

1. Science

2. Commerce

3. Arts/Humanities

Let’s discuss them in detail.

#1 Science

All of us have studied science subjects till class 10th and have a fair idea about what topics it includes. Also, everyone keeps saying science stream is where all the intelligent students and nerds are found. They go on to become doctors and engineers. But don’t get swayed by people’s opinions. Hold a candle to reality and see what interests you.

If the science stream’s studies and concepts related to the natural, chemical, and physical world excite you, you can go for this stream. You will study everything from the structure of an atom to the laws of gravity. If you are curious and think logically, you will find success in this stream. It is two branches based on the subjects you take:

  • Medical (PCB) – Physics, Chemistry, Biology, English, Optional Subject
  • Non-Medical (PCM) – Physics, Chemistry, Maths, English, Optional Subject

You can also take PCMB if you are unsure if you want to choose the medical field or the non-medical field. For example, you can become a doctor, engineer, zoologist, microbiologist, pharmacist, researcher, teacher, professor, scientist and many other professions.

#2 Commerce

You might hear that only average students choose the commerce stream, but that’s not true at all. If you are interested in studying trade, business and finance, this is the perfect stream for you. In commerce, you would study the ways to exchange goods and services.

It will be good if you are good at maths because even if you take maths or not, you will deal with numbers and data that are the basis of commerce. Subjects in BA commerce are Accountancy, Business Studies, Economics, English, Mathematics (or optional subject).

#3 Humanities

This stream has been wrongly disregarded for the longest time. But things are starting to look up in the second decade of the 21st century. People are have been embracing humanities for the art and a wide range of career options it provides. It studies the world and cultures around the world.

The main subjects are History, Economics, Geography, Sociology, Political Science, and Psychology. The optional issues are Maths, Legal Studies, Fine Arts, Physical Education, Home Science, Media Studies.

Talk to people who have experience in the stream you want to choose. They would guide you better with their personal experiences to help you make a better choice. Good luck!
