21st-century Engineering: Top 3 Emerging Careers

Posted by Neha Kaul on August 27th, 2021

Engineering continues to be heavily vouched for and the most popular career option even in the 21st century. Parents and society tout for its stability and predictability. For example, they know what one needs to do for admission in B. Tech 2021.

While the traditional streams like mechanical, electrical, computer science, electronics, and chemical engineering continue to remain popular, there are many new careers in this domain such as B. Tech - Computation & Mathematics, Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), Blockchain, etc.

Please find below the top three career options for B.Tech students in the new age.

1. Machine Learning/Artificial Intelligence

These are taught as a part of computer science and involve installing intelligence in machines to function automatically and independently. Since machines are made intelligent, they can finish tasks productively and efficiently.

Then there is robotics, where if you combine AI with robots, its applications and potential increase multifold. There are applications of AI and ML everywhere – from industries dealing with military simulations, autonomous cars to automatic content delivery and customer service.

The tried and tested route to make a career in the field of Machine Learning/Artificial Intelligence is via a B.Tech in Computer Science Engineering, followed by PGP/certification courses in artificial intelligence and machine learning.

However, some universities also offer specialised B.Tech in artificial intelligence and machine learning. After you finish your studies, you can make a career as a Data Scientist, Machine Learning Engineer, Artificial Intelligence Engineer, Data Analyst or Machine Learning Architect.

2. Internet of Things (IoT)

This concept is relatively new but is picking up rapid pace due to the massive potential it has. We know how the internet has completely transformed the digital world. Internet of things talks about the possibilities that will be unlocked if its features were connected to ordinary objects in the house.

It includes a connected network of objects that send and receive data through transmitters. Ever thought about how the health monitors and smartwatches you wear function? That is the Internet of Things. You can have a lot of applications ranging from smart toasters, smart refrigerators to smart fabrics!

There is a sub-domain for the industrial sector - Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) that applies IoT applications and principles in the industrial sector. In addition, short-term courses and a unique specialisation in B. Tech IoT (Internet of Things) under the computer Science branch are available.

3. Cryptocurrency/Blockchain

Cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin are no longer the new kid on the block. Everyone knows they are an excellent application of blockchain technology. You can find blockchain applications in fields ranging from banking, finance, healthcare, voting, stocks, government transactions, trading, insurance, Internet of Things, supply chain management, music, to real estate.

There are few long-term courses and specialised degrees in this field, yet since it is still evolving, you can take up some online courses from Udemy and Coursera. You can make a career as a Blockchain Quality engineer, Blockchain Developer, Blockchain legal consultant, Blockchain Project Manager and Blockchain designer.

Summing Up

The field of engineering is not new, and it has been around for quite some time now. And due to the variety, you get to see in the streams, new developments in the technological world, and new innovations across industries, something novel is always available.

If you are interested in something new like creating new software, new travel mode, new material, engineering has many possibilities with new and emerging branches like B. Tech - Computation & Mathematics. If you are confused about which stream to choose from, try career counselling to get all your answers.
