How does the two-phase orthodontic treatment works?

Posted by Mike Jones on September 8th, 2021

If your 6 year old is suggested to wear Fremont braces for some time, it means that he has been picked up for a two-phase treatment by your orthodontist. Fremont orthodontics has evolved a lot and there are plenty of mild treatments for children as well, and taking such treatments at an early age shall never make the child wear those conspicuous braces as a young adult.

The primary goal of the first phase treatment is to allow for normal development of the permanent teeth. This mostly stems from issues involving jaw growth in children who are significantly at risk of a jaw surgery at a later stage. This early phase of treatment occurs when the jawbones are highly malleable. Once the bones become firm, it becomes very difficult to reshape the jaw through simple orthodontic procedures and in this case, invasive surgery will be required.

Some common methods of treatments used during the phase include:

· Use of traditional braces

· Headgear

· Specialized retainers

· Space maintainers

· Appliances for expansion

· Expansion appliances

The phase-one treatment is designed to prepare your child for a better outcome and make the phase-two treatment path easier. There is nothing sure that this early intervention shall not eliminate or eliminate the need for braces in the phase two treatment. Between the phase-one and phase-two treatment, the orthodontist shall examine your child’s teeth with the help of X-rays and other physical examinations to monitor further jaw development and eruption of any remaining permanent teeth. Although, the in-between period might not need the use of any dental appliances, in complex cases, the child will be asked to wear a retainer to maintain the progress that was made in the phase-one treatment. As a parent, it is compulsory to maintain and follow up with your orthodontist without fail. The more regular and dedicated you are towards the treatment, the better it is for you and your child.

Phase-two orthodontic treatment is the process most of us are familiar with. Your child will be asked to wear Fremont braces, which he will be already anticipating. The braces will be applied to the top and bottom of the teeth. With the help of such a treatment, your child’s permanent teeth will be in a perfect position and he or she will come up with a healthy and sparkling smile. The teeth will also be aligned for function and stability with braces and specialized retainers or expansion appliances.

If it is required, your orthodontist shall replace the missing teeth and those teeth coming out of the dental arch will either be aligned to the arch or removed. If you feel your child needs an orthodontic treatment, you should get in touch with us here. drtoddhunt.com
