The Process Involved in Sibling DNA Testing

For a Sibling Ship DNA Test, the first step is to collect the samples of the parties. Once the samples are collected, the same is sent to the testing facility, where the whole process of DNA profiling and report generation takes place.

Buccal Swabs made up of sterile cotton are rubbed against the cheek walls (inside) from where epithelial cells are attached to the swab surface. Then DNA is extracted from the cells and studied.

In the next step, the land-stand DNA molecule is broken into smaller fragments called Short Tandem Repeats or STRs. Then the STRs are subject to the process of amplification. Polymerase Chain Reaction or PCR is the technology used for the amplification process. Following these, the computer program reads and creates the genetic data, which is in the form of a DNA fingerprint/profile.

Individual DNA profiles of the involved siblings are then compared to find a match. Finally, reporting is done, which concludes the process of the Sibling Ship DNA Test.
